Bente van der Meijden
- PhD Fellow
Bente is a physician specialized in global health with a long-standing interest in the subject. From a young age, she has been fascinated by different countries and cultures, which later shaped her professional path. This curiosity and commitment to working across cultures led her to pursue opportunities in international healthcare and research aimed at improving care in low-resource settings for children with a disability.
Since 2020, Bente has been working in Malawi as a family medicine educator for the university while also providing clinical care. Her clinical work focuses on the paediatric ward, with particular attention to children suffering from malnutrition. In this setting, she frequently encounters children living with disabilities, highlighting the need for a better understanding of their health needs and the challenges faced by their families.
Motivated by this need, Bente initiated, together with her local colleagues, the founding of a disability clinic. This initiative forms the basis of her PhD research, which aims to better understand the experiences and needs of children with disabilities and their families, and to improve the care they receive. The findings are directly used to inform and strengthen clinical practice, while collaborations within and outside Malawi support sustainable improvements in disability care.
